The PROSPER project ‘Promoting Innovation for sustainable sorting and recycling of dedicated bio-based plastics’, in which FCC Medio Ambiente participates, aims to lead the change towards circularity in the bio-based plastics market.

Bioplastics are currently considered a sustainable substitute for fossil-based plastics due to their origins and in many cases their biodegradability or recyclability through chemical depolymerisation. However, before they can be recycled, it is necessary to be able to separate them in treatment centres and to have an adequate infrastructure to be able to reintroduce the polymers as raw materials.

The PROSPER project brings together the different actors in the bio-based plastics value chain: from large plastics packaging producers to waste management companies, from technology centres to companies developing sorting technologies, to try to lay the foundations for a sustainable circular economy for plastics.

PROSPER aims to improve the recycling and management of bio-based plastics through policy development, analysis of applicable fees and quantification of recycling rates for these materials. It will also demonstrate technical advances in recycling on an industrial scale and assess the market potential for these plastic products, considering their environmental impact and more appropriate business models.

FCC Medio Ambiente will participate in the project by assessing the technical feasibility of separating bio-based plastics at waste treatment centres. It will also analyse the effectiveness of separation at source by the public.
