H2TRUCK (Research and Development of a New Heavy-Duty Vehicle for Urban Service Applications with Battery-Hydrogen Fuel Cell Hybrid Technology)

The project named "RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW HEAVY-DUTY VEHICLE FOR URBAN SERVICE APPLICATIONS WITH HYBRID BATTERY-HYDROGEN FUEL CELL (H2TRUCK) TECHNOLOGY" and file number PTAS-20211014 has been subsidised by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) and supported by the Ministry of Science and Innovation ofSapin, in the framework of the 2021 call of the Sustainable Automotive Technology Programme within the Spain's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan funded by the European Union.

    
              


The specific aim has been to manufacture a heavy-duty chassis-platform with 100% electric propulsion powered by a hydrogen cell and lithium-ion battery hybrid system that is completely environmentally friendly, with the ambitious objective that this hybrid chassis can be applied in the future to any equipment or machine that provides urban services, regardless of the number and arrangement of axles or the bodywork installed. The first implementation of the H2TRUCK platform has been carried out on a 21m3 side-loading compactor collector.

H2TRUCK had an eligible expenditure of over €5.5 million and has been developed by a consortium led by FCC Medio Ambiente and formed by prestigious companies, such as Irizar, Jema and Calvera, and complemented by important public research bodies (PRBs) such as Insia, Tecnalia, Cidetec and the National Hydrogen Centre. The project has been completed as planned and since June 2024 the first prototype, developed on the aforementioned side-loading truck, is operational and being tested in different Spanish cities.

This project follows the innovative R&D line of the multi-award-winning 100%-electric chassis-platform project for urban service vehicles that FCC Medio Ambiente presented in 2019 and has several ie Urban units in service, both side-loading and rear-loading.
