FCC Medio Ambiente is once again awarded the Fuengirola street cleansing and waste collection contract
Fuengirola City Council (Málaga) has renewed its trust in FCC Medio Ambiente with the award of the new waste collection and street cleansing service for the city, which the company has been providing since 2020. The contract, which began on 1st January last, is worth a total of €37.1 million for the next four years, with a possible one-year extension.
The new services, which serve over 85,000 inhabitants, will count with a wokforce of 237 people and a complete renovation of the fleet, with 74 units of equipment, including electric vehicles. The new central machinery depot has been designed with a high degree of sustainability and functional improvements and will be equipped with photovoltaic panels, electric-vehicle charging points and measures to reduce energy and water consumption, as well as LED technology in all the lighting on the site. All of this is an expression of Fuengirola City Council's and FCC Medio Ambiente's utmost commitment to providing environmentally friendly services.
The company offers a technological and innovative service supported by the VISION application, an integrated digital management platform developed exclusively by FCC Medio Ambiente, which enables real-time interaction with service incidents, residents' requests and the municipal team. It will also feature GIS systems, GPS in all equipment and a Service Monitoring Centre to centralise the coordination of all tasks.
The waste collection service, which manages around 36,000 tonnes per year, will introduce new selective collection fractions: vegetable waste, waste from construction and demolition, domestic waste or animal by-products not intended for human consumption and waste from beach cleaning tasks, in addition to the organic fraction, which will be extended to all households. The service equipment will also be equipped with measures to reduce noise impact.
For street cleansing, which covers more than 130 kilometres of streets, the inclusion of new areas of the municipality that were not previously included in the services and the reinforcement of most of the tasks, especially stain removal and mechanical sweeping, and services during peak season and events of great tourist interest, such as the Feria del Rosario or the Marenostrum festival. Trolleys with electric support, high-capacity sweeping machines with a built-in high-pressure spot-cleaning system and auxiliary DFSK vehicles, also electric, will be incorporated. 510 litter bins will be renewed and volumetric filling sensors, weighing control systems and container lifting signals via RFID identification will be installed, as well as QR systems for verifying the emptying of litter bins.
In order to improve citizen collaboration and the quality of services, a Communication and Awareness Plan will be implemented to involve residents in caring for their city which will consist of several general information campaigns and environmental education actions in schools, associations and entities throughout the contract.
